Bay Labels 1933 - 1945
The earlies known label has the text "Bay" surrounded by a prisma formed frame and the additional text "Echte Keramik Handarbeit". It is known in two colours, orange & silver and yellow & silver. This label is very rare and the exact years it was used is not known. It has been found on ceramics from 1938-1940 so it is a pre war label.
There is also a label with the company name "BAY" in a prisma shaped frame with the additional text " Diamant". The years for this label is not known but it is probably a late 30s or a early 40s label since it also use the prisma shaped frame around the companyname "BAY".
A label with the text "ECHTE KERAMIK handarbeit" is also known from this period.
Bay Labels 1946 - 1952
A label with a picture of a smoke stack has been documented on Bay ads from 1950 and is probably the label that came after the "Prisma" labels. The upper part of the label has the form of a vase. The lower part has the text "BAY-KERAMIK". The label comes in two sizes and four colours, red & silver, red & gold, blue & silver and blue & gold.
The exact years it was used are not known. It is documented in an ad from 1950 and the following label with the "Bay crown" is documented in an ad from 1954, so it was at least used until 1950-1953. The year Bay started to use this label is even more uncertain. It is asumed to be a post war label but it might have been introduced earlier.
Bay Labels 1953 - 1956
After the "Smoke stack label" introduced Bay a label with a crown. The crown was used in at least six generations of labels until the early 70s.
The earliest version of the "crown label" has the text "Bay Keramik" with a curvy font (curvy "r" and a "k" with a loop). It is only known in two colours, red & silver and red & gold. There are two generations of this label:
- Wide crown and thin "mi" in "Keramik".
- Wide crown and bold "mi" in "Keramik".
There are also a variant with a narrow crown with bold "mi" in "Keramik" in yellow & gold. It can be found on ceramics with the decor "Tosca" dated 1955. This label is rare and was probably only used a short time.
The exact years these labels were used are not known. The earliest label with the thin "mi" in "Keramik" is known from an ad from 1954 and the yellow label with the narrow crown is well documented from 1955. All labels are rare and were probably only used a few years. Based on this, the earliest label with the thin "mi" was used ca. 1953-1954 and the labels with the thick "mi" ca. 1955-1956.
Three other labels with the curvy "r" and the wide crown are known from this period:
- A label with the text "Céramique d' art" and the wide crown is dated 1954 (a dated plate). "Céramique d' art" is probably a series of ceramics since it can be found on ceramics with different decors. The label is very rare and was probably only used for a short time. The label "Art Pottery" is an english version of this label.
- A label with the decor name "Florenz" from 1955.
-A label with the text "Bay" and the decor name "Carmen". It is very rare and there are no information about this label.
bay Labels 1957 – 1961
The label with the wide crown also comes with a less curvy font with a straight "r" and "k". This label is rare and must have been used only a short time. It comes in three colours: Red & Silver, Red & Gold and Yellow & Silver. There is also a label with the wide crown and the text "Handgemalt" that has a similar font. This label is only known in one colour, red & silver.
The same font is also used on a label with a slightly more narrow crown with visible large "stones" in the crown. This label is more common and is used on ceramics with well documented decors like Kongo and Sudan from 1959 and Reims from 1960. These decors are not known with any earlier labels which date this label to 1959 and 1960. The decor Ravenna by Bodo Mans was produced 1959-1962 (M.P. Tomas 2006). Ravenna decors kan be found with this label but also with the next generation of the label with a more simple crown. This give the last year this label was used to 1960 or 1961. The label comes in two versions but only in one colour, yellow & silver.
Based on this, the years these two labels were used are approximately 1957-1958 and 1959-1961.
Bay also made tea pots and coffe pots. A label with the crown and the text "Bay Feuerfest" (heat-proof) was used during this period. This label is larger than the other ones used on art ceramics.
A label in yellow & silver with the text "Handarbeit" is from this period. It is probably a original Bay-label since it is not known on any other ceramics of other manufacturer. The label is very rare and is only known with the base marks "GERMANY" and "WEST-GERMANY" which date the label around late 50s to early 60s.
