During the end of the 30s and the early 40s Bay used base marks with a four digit number on lidded boxes and tree digit numbers on plates. However, Bay pieces from these early years are very rare so it is difficult to exact know when this mark was used. I have only three pieces from this period, two lidded boxes and one small basket. The lidded boxes are marked 1058 and the basket GERMANY 914. Unmarked pieces and several of the base marks that can be found with the latter "chimney label" were probably also used during the early years of the company.

Unmarked Bay ceramics are rare. Some early forms like wall-vases and candle holders can be unmarked. These pieces can be found with the labels used 1946 - ca 1954. Unmarked pieces were probably also produced during the period 1933-1945.

Debossed, embossed and incised marks
1933 - ca. 1961
The mark "GERMANY" with the form number and size in many different styles was used during a long period until 1961. Bay choosed to continue the use of the base mark "GERMANY" for moulds many years after the formation of West- and East Germany. The exact year Bay began to use the mark "GERMANY" is not known since pieces from the early years are so rare.
The earliest marks are probably the incised ones. It is sometimes difficult to se if the base mark is incised or debossed. Moulded debossed marks began to be common in the mid 50s. Embossed marks were introduced 1959-1961. After 1961 were all forms marked with embossed marks.
Both straight, slanted and curved "Y" in the base mark can be seen in the early incised marks. The curved "Y" became typical for Bay base marks in the 60s and the70s.
In the mid 50s a "quare-shaped A" began to be used in some base marks. This "square A" also became typical for Bay base marks during the 60s and 70s.

The debossed mark "MADE IN GERMANY" is a very rare mark. The mark is probably not a mould mark but appears to have been pressed in the wet clay.
